Groundhogs

For as long as I can remember, I always felt it was a special thing to see a groundhog. I remember my dad would always point them out to me if we were driving somewhere and there would be one grazing on the side of the road. I always point them out to anyone I am with in the car too. I used to have a favorite one that I saw often when driving down a particular road to work. They always make me happy to see.

This female groundhog is crazy about my backyard mulberry tree's leaves and berries. She folded the top of the tree over when she climbed it.

2011 Visiting Groundhog

This is one of three groundhogs that have come to the steps for peanuts this summer. This one was photographed on July 22, 2011.

2010 Visiting Groundhog

The year of 2010 was a very special year because two baby groundhogs were born from a resident groundhog that lived a few houses back from me. The babies started visiting my yard and enjoyed feeding on weeds in an area near the woods that is kept rather wild. They love the Queen Anne's Lace. I also discovered that they love peanuts and sunflower seeds. I wasn't able to get any photos of the babies. Sadly, on my birthday, someone hit one of the babies with their car two houses down from me. I picked him up and buried him in the garden. His sibling (not sure if it is a male or female) still continued to visit my yard on a daily basis to eat. It was so enjoyable to see it visiting I watched it grow larger and larger until one day, it didn't come (went into hibernation I hope!). I can't wait to see the groundhog next year.
