July 2023 Baby Cottontails

A mother rabbit decided to keep her babies safe in the grass near the base of a concrete slab with a large flower pot on it.  They were only about 3" long in these photos.  I didn't even realize there were three of them until I processed the photos because it was farther back in the hollowed-out area.  These photos were taken 7-1-23 at dusk.

These photos of the middle rabbit shown above were taken 7-15-23.  This was the friendliest of the three, and the one I most often saw in the garden and Lyle's yard.  It let me take lots of photos as it foraged for young plants in the lawn and garden.  Mama rabbit made an appearance to make sure her baby was ok.  She seemed fine with me taking photos.  The first set shows it eating a small swamp milkweed plant all the way down to nothing.  I didn't know rabbits ate milkweed.

I managed to get one photo of one of the other babies on 7-16-23, but then it hopped off.

Here is the middle baby again on 7-18-23 in Lyle's yard.  This rabbit spent a lot of time in Lyle's enclosed yard, especially at night, where it stayed safe under the butterfly bushes and boysenberries.  I had to train Lyle to leave the rabbit alone, which unfortunately must have had the effect of the rabbit believing that dogs were ok.  Less than a week after these photos were taken, I heard my neighbors across the street trying to get their dog to release a rabbit it had caught.  I had hoped it was released unharmed, but the next day, Lyle directed me to look under the butterfly bushes, and there was my favorite baby rabbit, dead, with a gash on its neck.  I had gotten used to seeing this rabbit every day and was looking forward to having it around as an adult.  I never expected to have to bury it in my yard while it was still a cute little baby with its milk spot on its head.

Baby Cottontail

On June 15, 2022, this baby was out in the backyard.  It was near sunset, so I took two sets:  one without the flash, and one with the flash.

Cottontail in Moss Garden

I photographed this rabbit through the window on June 9, 2017.  It was lying down on the large moss carpet section of my moss garden.  I don't think I've ever seen such a comfortable wild rabbit.

Cottontail in Winter

There is a strong possibility that this is the baby that grew up in the yard over the summer.  This cottontail was photographed sitting in my backyard on December 7, 2011.

This little baby is growing up in my backyard this spring.

He is almost double in size, but it would be impossible to tell from the photos.

July 27, 2011

It was nearly dusk when I took these photos, so they are not as clear as some of the others.  You can tell the bunny is starting to look more like an adult now.
