Solitary Scrabble in Mom's Memory (2024- )
Scrabble was mine and my parents' favorite board game. We didn't play many board games, but when we did, this was usually the one. When my mom died in June 2024, I thought it would be a meaningful way to honor her memory by playing Scrabble in a solitaire fashion. I set up the game with two sets of 9 tiles---one set for me, and one for her; and playing a turn for each of us every night until the game is finished. Then I start a new board. My mom majored in English in college and had an excellent vocabulary and spelling ability. I excel at spelling, but not so much at vocabulary. I can spell many words for which I do not know their meanings. When I play my solitaire version, there are no "challenges" because I am trying to make it a learning experience. I want to make sure all the spellings are correct and that any questionable words are acceptable in the official Scrabble Dictionary. Also, If I put a word on the board for which I do not know the meaning, I look it up and try to commit its definition to memory. At the end of the game, when it becomes difficult to spell something on the board, I allow the use of the guide in the back of the directions containing permissible two-letter words, and I learn their meanings too. Here are a few lines about Scrabble from a rhyming poem about my mom that I am working on:
I began a daily ritual involving Scrabble,
our favorite board game;
playing one turn for me, and another in her name.
I devote time to her memory, while improving my brain.
Spelling and vocabulary skills, I will continually gain.
Each of us spelled the word “home” on our very first play.
Perhaps it was the universe letting me know her spirit has a place to stay.
Old Boards (2004-2020)
Below are pictures of completed Scrabble game boards from games that I have played with others. Our scores are also posted.
7-Tile Games
9-Tile Games
While browsing through the game instructions, I came across a variation that is played with 9 tiles instead of 7. One can also receive a 50-point bonus for using 7, 8, or 9 letters on one turn. I managed to do this for my first word of the first game!
