Lyle's Eighth Birthday.  There were so many good ones that I displayed them in the order taken instead of selecting favorites.

At first, Lyle wasn't too happy about doing the photo shoot because he didn't want to wear his birthday hat.

The moment the hat came off, he was all relaxed for the next set!

Then I put the hat back on.

We took a break and played some spikeball, and came back up.  By now, it was nearly dark, and I had to rely on the lighting I set up.  I thought I might need a flash, so I tried a few practice shots with the flash on, but I didn't like how they were turning out.

I went back to no flash, but increased the ISO.  They are a little grainy, but nicer than they would have turned out with a flash.  I decided to keep the hat off for the first set, and I'm glad I did.  He displayed some very nice expressions.

I put on the hat, and just like that, his expression was flat.  I tried asking him questions and making statements that might cause him to perk up, but he just couldn't seem to muster up a genuine smile.  He only had his mouth open because he was still panting from playing spikeball before the shoot.

A couple times during the set above, I had to put his hat back on after he shoved it onto the floor with his foot.  At this point, I asked him to please keep his hat on and let me take some nice photos.  I reminded him of all the things I do for him (feed him, give him fresh water, take him out to poop, give him showers to keep him clean).  I asked if he could just do this for me.  The very next photo, he was smiling!  Aside from two photos taken while there was a distracting sound outside, the rest of the photo shoot was all smiles.
